Data is everywhere, but what does it mean?

I've said this hundreds of times: There is an infinite number ways to slice and dice data in order to tell whatever story you want to. I think some people see the world through quantitative-analysis glasses. Thanks to D for pointing me at this example.

Interesting diagram. Ya, we're creatures of symbols. We like to think things are neatly defined and categorized. It will be our inevitable downfall as a species if we don't learn to stop projecting our illusions onto the world around us.

Geez, I need sleep.

TP: I agree. It's one thing to measure, manage, report, present, and yet it's another thing entirely to conclude, objectify, label, etc. Although, in most cases, the limitations of common methods of communications make it really difficult to do one without the other.

A: Yes, it means you're cool. I'm in a similar position, ususally, between the 2nd and 5th rows, usually very tired and at the same time very interested.

If I'm ever really judged based on how tired I look and where I choose to sit, or where I find an empty seat, too bad for the judge. Cause really it comes down to what I take away from, and bring to, the shared experience. Just the fact that I showed up should be the biggest judgement of all.

But of course, where there are unmeasured stats, there will come someone with a new form of measuring, which will lead to management, and then comparisons, and eventually judgements. /rd
