Moose Goose Nickel Perogy Potato Enterprise

An article in today's Globe and Mail shows images of some of the "big art" on the side of Canadian highways and small towns. I blogged about this recently, here, here and here. The article actually does no reporting or writing, it's just a set of photos, with no direct link, so I have reproduced the photos here.

It's interesting to me to see what our communities deem worthy of tribute and celebration. Hundreds of years ago the biggest structure in European towns was the church. Now the biggest structure in most cities is the bank building. But there are towns out there that celebrate animals from the local lands, foods that define the culture, work that empowers the town, and fictional space flight.

The Moose in Moose Jaw.
The Goose in Wawa.
The Nickel in Sudbury.
The Perogy in Glendon, Alberta.
The Potato in PEI.
The Starship Enterprise in Vulcan, Alberta.
